About the American College of Hyperbaric Medicine

The American College of Hyperbaric Medicine (ACHM) is a physician-led professional organization dedicated to advancing the safe, evidence-based practice of hyperbaric medicine.

Founded in 1983, ACHM serves a multidisciplinary community of healthcare professionals and organizations involved in hyperbaric medicine and wound care. Through education, professional development, collaboration, clinical leadership, and a commitment to patient safety, the College works to strengthen the quality and practice of hyperbaric medicine.

Advancing Hyperbaric Medicine Through Education, Leadership & Collaboration

ACHM was established by physicians who recognized the need for a professional organization dedicated to the developing specialty of hyperbaric medicine.

Today, the College brings together physicians, advanced practice providers, nurses, hyperbaric technologists, wound care professionals, researchers, healthcare organizations, and others who share a commitment to safe, appropriate, evidence-based hyperbaric care.

ACHM supports professionals throughout their involvement in the specialty—from those beginning their education in hyperbaric medicine to experienced clinicians contributing through leadership, collaboration, Fellowship, and professional service.

At the center of that work is a shared goal: helping healthcare professionals deliver high-quality care while advancing the responsible practice of hyperbaric medicine.

Evidence-Based Hyperbaric Medicine

ACHM is committed to the appropriate, ethical, and evidence-based use of hyperbaric oxygen therapy.
Hyperbaric medicine is sometimes misunderstood as a niche or alternative treatment. In clinical practice, hyperbaric oxygen therapy is used within defined medical indications and as part of multidisciplinary care for selected conditions.

ACHM supports clinical practice grounded in scientific evidence, professional competency, responsible clinical judgment, and patient safety. The College does not support unsupported medical claims or the presentation of unproven applications as established standards of care.

This commitment to scientific integrity helps guide ACHM’s educational, professional, and safety-focused initiatives.

A Legacy Dating Back to 1983

ACHM was founded in 1983 by physicians who recognized the need for a national professional organization dedicated to the developing specialty of hyperbaric medicine.

Over more than four decades, the College has contributed to professional education, clinical guidance, safety initiatives, research efforts, and the continued development of the field.
