President’s Message: Certificate of Added Qualification in Hyperbaric Medicine
Increasing number of wound care practices and hospitals are adding hyperbaric oxygen therapy as a treatment option for difficult wounds. We believe at ACHM that wound healing begins here. The ACHM is a professional society dedicated to appropriate utilization, standards of care, education, training, certification, and recognition of hyperbaric oxygen therapy as a distinct medical specialty.
The American College of Hyperbaric Medicine was founded in 1983 in support of clinicians practicing hyperbaric medicine who recognized the importance of therapeutic oxygen in clinical applications, especially wound management.
A list of accepted indications for hyperbaric oxygen is available at the American College of Hyperbaric Medicine website.
Many wound care specialists supervise HBOT treatment. Most Hospitals, Medicare Administrative carriers (MACs) and private payers specify the training required for reimbursement of physician supervised HBOT treatment. Most require at least 40 Hr ACHM or UHMS approved the introductory course. Most hospitals and insurances now ask for a minimum number of treatments that are supervised by a credentialed physician.
The American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) had a practice pathway which was open for more than 10 years which allowed physicians to take sub speciality examination for recognized sub specialty board certification in undersea and hyperbaric medicine (UHM) which was initially offered by the American Board of Preventive Medicine (ABPM) and now also by the American Board of Emergency Medicine. But now this pathway is only available to physicians who complete one year of Accreditation approved fellowship in UHM. Most practicing physicians are unable to stay away from practice for one year. Considering this situation, The ACHM created first CAQH pathway for hyperbaric medicine in 2003.
The ACHM endorses the certification examinations offered by of the American Board of Wound Healing. The ABWH offers certification for physicians, and allied healthcare professionals, in wound care and hyperbaric medicine. ABWH certification is the gold standard for certification as the ABWH is the only organization that is endorsed by several professional societies, the ACHM and the APWCA. These professional endorsements add strength and additional validation of the earned Certificate of Additional Qualification.
The American Board of Wound Healing now offers the following certification examinations:
Physician Certification in Hyperbaric Medicine
Physician Certification in Wound Care
Certified Hyperbaric & Wound Care Specialist Examination (CHWS)
Certified Hyperbaric Specialist (CHS)
Certified Skin & Wound Specialist (CSWS)
The ABWH will soon offer certification pathways for international providers and anticipates endorsement from several international professional societies in the near future.
Please visit the ABWH website for additional information or to register.
