The ACHM approves and endorses hyperbaric educational courses that satisfy prescribed requirements and comply with standards as established by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), for the training of physicians and providers credentialed to supervise hyperbaric oxygen therapy.  ACHM approved curriculum must consist of a minimum of 40 hours of training dedicated to the clinical practice of hyperbaric medicine.  An extensive knowledge base required to evaluate hyperbaric patients and safely execute hyperbaric therapy.  Thus, the 40 hours of initial training should include hyperbaric physiology and mechanisms of action, the diagnosis and management of the hyperbaric medicine patient, clinical indications, possible side effects and the management of these complications, and training in hyperbaric facility operations, safety and emergency procedures. Additionally, significant focus must be devoted to the clinical aspects of hyperbaric oxygen therapy as it applies to wound care. The ACHM supports the use of e-learning and online platforms to provide the initial 40 hours of didactic lecture content.

Hyperbaric Medicine: Principles & Practice, 2nd Edition
